Cross breeding local female cattle breeds with high return breeds through artificial insemination is a possibility to increase sustainable beef production in (sub) tropics on a short notice. This project contributes to acquiring knowledge about sustainable cross breeds in Vietnamese cattle breeding.
Sustainable beef production in Southeast Vietnam.
Cross breeding local female cattle breeds (Bos indicus) with high return breeds (Bos taurus) by artificial insemination is already frequently implemented in Vietnam. Further knowledge acquirement about the characteristics and performances of these crossed breeds and the nutritional needs of the cross-bred calves is needed for a higher return and a more sustainable beef production.
To realise this knowledge, this project was started in collaboration with research- and educational institutions in the South of Vietnam. In the Research farm of the university of Nong Lam (Ho Chi Minh City), 60 local cows were inseminated with 3 different high return breeds, and their cross-breed calves are monitored intensively. A survey will be conducted among 50 small cattle farmers to map current practices regarding crossbred calves. Based on both bata sources, recommendations will be formulated to make local beef production more sustainable.
