Guest Lecture prof. F. Mähl:

CO₂ in the Built Environment: from Challenge to Opportunity

Europe’s ambition to become the first climate-neutral continent by 2050 sets an inspiring yet urgent challenge — and the construction and real estate sectors are key players in this transformation. How can we rethink our buildings to reduce emissions, extend their lifespan, and move from linear to circular models? Beyond new construction, it is above all within the existing building stock that the key question emerges: should we demolish, renovate, or transform?

In this guest lecture, Prof. Dr.-Ing. F. MählProfessor of Structural Design and Building Physics at Frankfurt University of Applied Sciences, shares his research on transforming outdated university buildings into sustainable and energy-efficient assets. His innovative approach demonstrates how academic insights can directly shape the real estate sector’s transition towards carbon neutrality.

At HOGENT, these methods will soon be put into practice: final-year Real Estate students will apply Prof. Mähl’s framework to the Schoonmeersen campus as part of our U!REKA  collaboration — linking international research to local, applied education.

Don’t miss this inspiring session connecting research, education, and practice in the journey toward a CO₂-neutral built environment.
