U!REKA & its partners.
HOGENT is one of the full partners of the U!REKA European University, which was launched in January 2024. European University Alliances are approved and funded by the European Commission through Erasmus+. This approval puts HOGENT in a select circle of 10 per cent of European higher education institutions that are part of such an Alliance. But it is much more than a prestige issue: being part of a European University Alliance offers a lot of opportunities in terms of international cooperation and knowledge sharing, international curricula and research initiatives.
European University U!REKA can be considered as a consolidation and extension of the U!REKA partnership that has been active since 2016 and of which HOGENT is a founding member. Since then, HOGENT has always played a leading role in that partnership.
Climate neutral and smart cities
With the European University Alliances initiative, the European Commission aims to promote and support ambitious collaboration between networks of institutions and external partners. European universities are transnational alliances that, as the European Commission itself defines it, ‘point the way to the universities of the future, promote European values and identity and transform the quality and competitiveness of higher education in Europe’.
The U!REKA European University’s ambition is to develop a long-term structural cooperation in education and research with a specific focus: contributing to a sustainable, human, inclusive and future-proof transition to climate-neutral and smart cities.
“The acknowledgement as a European University Alliance is a confirmation of our focus on creating cross-border knowledge communities in which the interaction between education and research are crucial”, says Kathleen Van Heule, who is HOGENT's International Office staff member.
Apart from HOGENT, the U!REKA European University consists of:
- Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences
- Frankfurt University of Applied Sciences
- Metropolia University of Applied Sciences
- Politecnico de Lisboa and VSB Technical University of Ostrava (Czech Republic).
