HOGENT University of Applied Sciences and Arts aspires to become climate-neutral+ by 2050 and concretises this commitment in a CO2 reduction plan 2025-2030.

The transition plan targets four major work domains:

  1. Energy
    1. Transition to fully renewable energy
    2. Reduce and suspend the use of fossil fuel
    3. Strongly decrease the average individual power consumption

  2. Mobility
    1. Create accessible and traffic-safe campuses
    2. Ensure internal and external involvement
    3. Pay attention to the planetary boundaries in mobility policy, including emissions
    4. Pay attention to inclusion in mobility policy
    5. Monitor and evaluate mobility policy and objectives

  3. Catering
    1. Commit to the protein shift in student restaurants, as the emissions of vegetarian dishes are about 12 times lower than those of meat dishes
    2. Sustainable catering at events
    3. Battle overconsumption and food waste

  4. Sense-of-urgency
Being climate-neutral+ by 2050 poses a challenge. It means taking decisions today, whose impact may only become visible in the long term. That is why administrators, staff and students need to be involved and convinced of the importance of climate action: necessity leads to action.

*HOGENT adds a + to the terms climate-neutral and climate-robust to indicate that HOGENT not only wants to work on reducing greenhouse gas emissions, but also takes into account the other planetary boundaries in doing so.
