Housing for exchange students
The Mercator D residence
Mercator is located in Nonnemeersstraat 19, 9000 Gent, which is approximately 1.7 kilometres from the city centre of Ghent.
Rooms:
- 12 square metres
- furnished with a bed (mattress, duvet and pillow), desk & chair, wardrobe, small fridge and bookshelves
- free internet acces is available in all rooms (Wi-Fi + LAN)
The toilets, showers, kitchen, washer and dryer are shared with other students.
This accommodation is not available for short stays (less than 30 days)
Renting a student room costs 1375 euros for one semester. This includes 55 euros/month for heating, water, electricity, internet and cleaning of shared facilities. The rent is due for the whole semester, even if you leave the student residence early. To confirm your booking, you will be asked to pay a 400 euro security deposit, which will be reimbursed after your stay if you leave the room behind in a clean condition.
It is possible to rent a HOGENT student room for the duration of one semester, meaning
- from September until January
- or from February until June
The exact period of the rental agreement will be communicated by the Housing service once the rooms are allocated.
Applying for a room is only possible if your home university has given you the confirmation that you are selected to come study at our university as an exchange student. Your home university will send you an application form on which you can indicate that you want to rent a room of HOGENT.
Please note that a room in Mercator D is not guaranteed by filling in the application form as there is always a big demand for student rooms at our student residence.
Only students who meet the following conditions are eligible for a student room in Mercator D:
- You will be studying at HOGENT University (KASK and School of Arts included) for the duration of one semester
- You are younger than 25 years old
The sooner a student finalizes their application, the more chance to get a room in the student residence. The student rooms are allocated as soon as possible after the registration deadline. For more information on the registration deadline, please contact our International Office via incoming@hogent.be (HOGENT) or els.moens@hogent.be (School of Arts).
Once the International Office has selected the students who get to stay in our student residence for the duration of their exchange programme, those lucky students will receive an email with more information about the room and practical agreements.
Students who start their exchange programme in the first semester will receive an email around May and students who enter the second semester get a confirmation email around November.

Students must clean their own room. Kitchens, living rooms and sanitary provisions are cleaned by the cleaning team, but students are expected to help ensure that the common spaces remain hygienic.
Eddies residence
Eddies is located in Keramiekstraat, 9000 Gent, which is next to our campus Vesalius, approximately 2,7 kilometres from our biggest campus (Schoonmeersen) and 4 kilometres from the city centre of Ghent.
Rooms:
- 12 square metres
- furnished with a single bed (mattress, duvet and pillow included), desk & chair, wardrobe, small fridge and bookshelves
- free internet access is available in all rooms (Wi-Fi)

The rent is due for the whole semester, even if you leave the student residence early. To confirm your booking, you will be asked to pay a 400 euro security deposit, which will be reimbursed after your stay if you leave the room behind in a clean condition.
Depending on your exchange programme, it is possible to rent a HOGENT student room in Eddies for the duration of one semester or two semesters:
- from September until January
- from February until June
- from September until June
