What is an exchange student?

An exchange student is a student who temporarily studies at HOGENT for one semester or academic year, but stays enrolled at her or his home institution. Exchange students are expected to earn credits which they can transfer to their degree studies at their home institution.

Bilateral agreements

You can only be considered as an exchange student if there is a valid bilateral agreement between your home institution and HOGENT.

Nomination & application

If you are interested in coming to HOGENT for an exchange semester, please contact the International Office of your home institution. They will have to nominate you as a candidate for an exchange semester at HOGENT by sending an e-mail to the HOGENT International Office (incoming@hogent.be) indicating your name and the exchange programme you want to take part in.

Once your nomination has been accepted by HOGENT, you will be invited by e-mail to complete an online application form and provide us with the necessary documents to prepare your stay in Ghent.

The School of Arts has different regulations. More information is available on schoolofartsgent.be.

Language requirements

Exchange students are expected to have a good command of spoken and written English in order to be able to follow the lectures and complete the course assignments, oral presentations and exams. We advise students to have a B2.

In addition, if a student chooses one of the language courses in our International Curriculum, we expect him/her to have the required entrance level. In the list of the courses, and also in the ECTS description of the courses, the entrance level is stated in the title of the course. For example: Français (CEFR-B1): the minimum level of French to be able to take this class is B1.

Students taking one of the language courses will be asked to provide us a certificate to prove this level. The certificate can be a statement by one of the home institution's language teachers.
