Kingfisher.

Kingfisher - Alcedo atthis

Want to spot a kingfisher? Head over to the pond on HOGENT’s Schoonmeersen campus, between building B and the R4. This location has everything a colourful kingfisher could wish for; clean, clear water with small fish and aquatic insects, overhanging branches to perch on, and sandy, steep banks for nesting. The male digs a nest tunnel up to half a metre deep, then catches a little fish to impress a potential mate. After about 20 days, the chicks hatch and fledge roughly 25 days later.

Tip: you can spot the kingfisher all year round, but recognising their disctinctive call really helps!
