European green woodpecker - Picus viridis
The European green woodpecker is thriving on HOGENT’s Schoonmeersen campus. It nests in the old trees behind the sports hall and feasts on ants in the grassy areas. With its long, sticky tongue, it can easily reach deep into the ground to catch its favourite snack. We’re making this beautiful bird even happier by mowing the grass less frequently and leaving some dead trees standing.
Tip: You’re most likely to hear the green woodpecker in March, with its laughing whinnying call. That’s why it’s nicknamed the ‘March foal’. Listen to its call.
